1973 Targa Florio Winner

It was a special few days spent on location in Sicily with ex factory driver Gijs van Lennep, as we reunited him with his 1973 Targa Florio winning Martini Racing Porsche Carrera RSR (R6) and paid tribute to his famous victory for Porsche at the Targa Florio in 1973.

Forty-Six years ago, he and fellow Porsche factory co-driver, Herbert Müller, were last here with this Martini Carrera RSR, writing a victorious chapter in Porsche racing history. The Targa Florio was an open-road endurance race held in the mountains of Sicily from 1906, and between 1955 and 1973 it was part of the Wold Sportscars Championship. The track length in the races last decades was 72 kilometres (45 miles) of the Circuit Piccolo delle Madonie, which was lapped 11 times.

We asked Gijs about his memories of the Targa and what his state of mind was before starting such a demanding race…. we asked him what was so special about the Martini Porsche RSR and what his secret was to winning this race… then of course we lit R6 again and filmed Gijs doing a few more laps around these legendary mountain roads on open megaphones.
